1796 S-94 R5+ Draped Bust Basal State-1+. Very slightly sharper but lightly burnished and there are some faint hairline scratches on the obverse. No roughness or verdigris. The upper part of the date remains visible but the lower part is worn into the rim. About 20% of the reverse devices are still visible. Essentially just a heavily worn cent, but there are enough details remaining to attribute it with certainty. Estimate Value $275 - UP

No marks or verdigris, but much of the planchet displays a very thin layer of hard greenish olive patina. The date and legends are complete and easily readable except for OF, which is faint. Lot 275
1796 S-96 R6 Draped Bust PCGS Genuine. Sharpness F12 or slightly better but covered with fine granularity. No verdigris, but there are some contact marks. These include myriad faint hairline scratches on the obverse, strongest in the field behind the portrait, plus two dull dents in the field off the lower end of the hair ribbon. Slightly glossy dark olive brown with lighter chocolate and steel brown toning on the devices. The date and legends are complete and clear. Very late die state, Breen II late, with a strong die crack bisecting the reverse passing through the T in UNITED to the right side of the M in AMERICA. The right upright of the M is now at least 3 times as wide as normal and it is apparent the die is coming apart. A neat die state for a very rare variety, one of the toughest in the numbered Sheldon series. Graded F12 net VG7 and tied for CC#9 in the Noyes census, his photo #24281. Del Bland says VG10 net VG7 and tied for CC#8. Our grade is F12+ sharpness net VG7. The attribution and Hixon-Reed-Ellsworth portion of the provenance are noted on the PCGS label. No verdigris and only a few trivial contact marks. The notable marks are a tiny rim tick over BE in LIBERTY and another over that T. The date is bold and the legends are clear. MDS, Breen state IV. A rim bruise over AT in STATES and another over the O in OF are the only notable marks. 1796 S-118 R5+ Draped Bust PCGS graded VG8. Rather glossy light olive and chocolate brown. A strong glass reveals extremely faint roughness in the fields and protected areas but overall the surfaces are very nice for the grade. No verdigris and the only marks are a very light rim bruise off the lower end of the hair ribbon and a barely visible planchet clip (as struck) over the second T in STATES. LDS, Breen state II, with a rim cud under the left edge of the denominator that fuses more than a half dozen dentils. A nice example of this very tough die variety. Our grade is consistent with the PCGS grade. Estimate Value $3,000 - UP
